The bar continues to be raised as the heated competition for Collegiate Club of the year came to an end in 2008. The rigorous criteria includes a laundry list of items that Air Force nailed. Mission statement and fulfillment, race performance at all levels, race promotion, club activities, rider development, on-going education, community involvement, and cycling advocacy are just the meat and potatoes of the selection. "The judging was really close...so close that I'm glad there is a points scale that is followed so I know the results are objective." said Daniel Matheny, USA Cycling's Collegiate Manager about the announcement.
The AFA club does several things that really stand out, including producing a bound club manual that has everything from training rides and local club records to nutritional breakdown of energy gels and an analysis of different training tools like powermeters. The team continues to thrive and grow even though most of the cadets cannot race in the summer months like the other collegiate cyclists. They have summer assignments that require their time and yet they continue to develop riders and move through the ranks in one of the most competitive cycling conferences in the nation.
